Bruce Hayward

I was born in Brampton, Ontario, a suburb of Toronto but lived in Willowdale most of my childhood years. I attended Toronto Junior Academy through grade nine, then, deciding I had had enough of the city and only being at one school, headed west to CUC where my older brother was in college. Those were some of the best years of my life as it was there that I made some of my best friends.

I have very fond memories of roommates such a as Terry Foulston, Bill Geates, and Stan Rogers.

Another big memory is singing with Jerry Littman, Ron Hyrchuk and Raymond Kerr in the The King’s Errands quartet (see vintage yearbook photo). We did a lot of traveling with our teacher and mentor Bob Lehmann. I miss those days a lot.I have had opportunity to see Bob once or twice in the last few years as he has been pastoring in Charlottetown, P.E.I.

It was at CUC that I met the love of my life, Dorothy Gay. It was not easy to date a Dean, but I am glad that I did. This summer it will be 48 years that we have been married and am grateful for how the Lord has led in our lives.

I took an eleven year hiatus in my education while I worked for the ABC, but in 1987, I finally graduated from CUC. In 1989 we went to Andrews University where I got my MDiv and Dorothy got her MA in Counseling. We then moved back to Alberta where we worked in Grande Prairie for five years. We were happy working in Alberta but God threw a curve at us and we were asked to move back to Berrien Springs, Michigan to be Associate Pastor at the Village Church. We spent the next twenty years there, retired and then took a new job as Field Directors for Adventist Frontier Missions working in SE Asia: now live in Thailand with projects that we supervise in Thailand and Cambodia.

My family: We have two daughters who both live in Berrien Springs, Michigan.

Darla is a medical technologist and runs the lab for a group of doctors in St. Joseph, MI. She is married to Michael Jordan and they have two children.

Dora works for the security department of Andrews University. She is married to Bryce Bowen and they have four children.

Where I turn for inspiration: The Bible and the writings of Ellen White.

Most interesting place I have traveled since high school: Probably visiting Auchwitz and realizing the tragedy of war.

Trait I admire most in a person: Honest friendship

Favourite CUC memory: Singing with the quartet

I can never have too many: Friends

CUC teacher I wish to honor: Bob Lehmann

Bruce Hayward served as the Class Pastor of our CUC High School Class of 69.
